Fifth Wheel Hitching Guide

Hitching up your fifth wheel can be difficult, especially if you are still new to RV ownership. Luckily, the more times that you do it, the better you’ll become. Soon enough, hitching up your fifth wheel will start to come naturally. Simply follow this guide from the experts at Pete's RV Center Indiana, and you’ll be well on your way!

1. Choose a Level Surface

You should hitch up your fifth wheel on a level surface whenever possible, as this will make the entire process much easier. Add wheel chocks for extra support and make sure that your hitch is at the correct height for coupling before you proceed.

2. Open the Wheel Jaws

Your next step will be to open the jaws or retract the locking bar by pulling the side handle and setting it securely in the open position. If you have trouble with this step, consider applying high-pressure grease or installing a lube plate.

3. Back-Up Slowly

Your third step will be to lower your tailgate and prepare to line up the hitch. If possible, have someone guide you as you back up, but make sure that they stay away from the kingpin. Keep in mind that your truck will shift slightly after you park it, so stop slightly early in order to accommodate this.

4. Adjust the Jacks

Now you’ll need to adjust the trailer jacks. The fifth wheel hitch plate should be about ½” above the kingpin box.

5. Engage the Coupler

Back up slowly until the kingpin is fully connected with the fifth wheel head. Once the connection has been made, park your truck and engage the emergency brake. Double-check that everything is locked and engaged properly before inserting the safety pin.

6. Test the Coupling and Complete Your Checklist

Finally, disengage the emergency brake, activate your trailer brakes, and place the truck in drive. Move forward slowly and allow the truck to tug at the trailer. If you encounter some resistance, that means that your connection is secure.

Before you hit the road, run through your safety checklist one last time. Make sure that your tailgate is closed, the safety pin and chains are in place, all wiring is properly connected, your wheel chocks have been removed, and the jacks have been lifted.
