How to Make Boondocking Part of Your RV Vacation
Boondocking isn't an all-or-nothing travel approach. It's possible, and sometimes preferred, to go dry camping for a portion of the vacation.

Go Boondocking During the Journey
If you need more than a day to travel to the campground, boondocking can be a great resource.
During the road trip, you may only need a place to pull over and park your camper. You wouldn't be at a destination long enough to need to connect your RV to any external hookups.
With boondocking, you can still ensure everyone gets a great night's sleep and is well-rested for the next leg of the journey. You can also save money and time by dry camping one (or more) nights on your travel days.
When you arrive at your destination, you can then connect your RV to the campground's external hookups.
Go Boondocking for the First Part of the Vacation
Many campgrounds have a dedicated section known as "overflow parking.” If there aren’t enough available campsites upon arrival, travelers can temporarily park their RVs in this area. While parked here, you won't be able to utilize the hookups just yet, and you’ll be boondocking until a spot opens up. Then, you can move your RV and connect up to the external hookups.
Go Boondocking During Unexpected Situations
It's possible that your camper will experience a maintenance issue in the middle of a vacation. You may need to get your RV fixed before you can safely hit the road and return home.
If the camper isn't fixed by the end of the work day, you likely won’t be able to take the RV back to the campground for the night. You also won't want to pay for an expensive hotel stay, especially on such short notice.
Some RV dealerships will allow you to spend the night in your camper. You'll be boondocking for an evening and your RV will be ready to go first thing when the service department opens the next day. If that’s not an option, you may be able to park your RV and go dry camping somewhere nearby.
