How to Park, Level, and Stabilize Your RV

One of the most difficult tasks you’ll have to learn as an RV owner is how to park it. Fortunately, once you’ve got the process down it isn’t too difficult! Double Check the Campground

While RVs are great camping vehicles, campgrounds can sometimes be a challenge to park in. Before you make any reservations be sure to check the website or call the front office to confirm the parking spot you’re reserving is the right size for your RV. You might also take a look at the streets leading into your campsite with google maps. While most places that rent RV spots are pretty accessible, it would be terrible to discover you can’t reach your destination because of a narrow or winding road!

Parking

If you can, we advise you get out of your RV to take a close look at your parking spot. Try to remove any obstacles that might be in the way and take note of items you may need to maneuver around, such as potholes or low hanging branches. If you don’t have a spotter you might buy a few small cones to help you safely pull into your parking spot. If you do have a spotter this will make parking quite a bit easier! Be sure to have your radio off and a window down so you can hear each other. 

Leveling

Many RV models are made with included automatic leveling tools. If this is the case for you, leveling should be as easy as the push of a button. However, if you’re having some trouble with your equipment we advise reading your owner’s manual. 

If you don’t have this included equipment you’ll need a bubble level as well as leveling blocks and ramps. To check your RV’s level, place your bubble level on the floor. Place markings by the tires that are on the unleveled side of the RV and pull it forward. Place your leveling ramps and blocks where the marks are and reverse your RV up onto them. Don’t try to lift your RV more than 2 inches at a time and be sure that your tires aren’t hanging off the blocks. Check your bubble level again and, if everything is even, you can place your tire chocks down and get started on stabilizing your RV.

Stabilizing 

Many RVs will come with stabilizing jacks, but if you bring your own the process is still pretty similar! Raise (or lower if the jack is attached to the RV) the jack still it is touching both the underside of the RV and the ground. If your jack is placed on sand or mud be sure to slip a board or two underneath it for a more secure footing. Once the jack is in place you can give it a few cranks to ensure that your RV is being supported. Be sure to check the bubble leveler on the floor once again to ensure the jacks have not affected the level of your RV.
