Important Precautions When Driving a Camper Van in High Winds
High winds can make driving a camper van more challenging, but using the following strategies can help! Read on to learn more - and if you’re in the market for a motorhome, check out the selection at Pete’s RV Center Indiana. Our dealership is based in Schererville, Indiana.
Increase Your Weight
Although carrying around extra weight in your camper van will lower your gas mileage, it can also help make your motorhome more stable in high winds. By simply keeping your tanks full, for example, you can add a significant amount of weight in an ideal location to add stability and traction.
Prepare for Change
One specific time when high winds can really get you in trouble is when you emerge from a sheltered area, such as a tunnel or a grove of trees. When driving your camper van, it's best to assume that there will be strong crosswinds in these locations. To prepare for these strong winds, make sure to grip the steering wheel tightly and do your best to reduce your speed.
Give Yourself a Space Cushion
In any driving condition, space is your friend. A space cushion gives you more room to correct if you make any mistakes while you're driving your motorhome.
On windy days, pay especially close attention to the gaps that you maintain between yourself and other large vehicles. After all, those vehicles are vulnerable to the same high winds that you are! To avoid a sideswipe collision, be sure to never drive beside another large vehicle unless you intend to pass that vehicle.
Give It a Break
Even if you're a seasoned camper van driver, driving in high winds can still be quite stressful. This can cause tension to build up in your arms and neck to the point that it becomes difficult to steer. To prevent problems, it's best to take frequent breaks while you're driving in high winds, even if it means adjusting your driving schedule and taking more breaks. Your body will thank you!
