RV Tire Age Guide: Knowing When to Replace
Tire replacements are not a yearly occurrence, and they occur just irregularly enough that you might not even remember how old your tires are. And if you’re purchasing a pre-owned RV, you might have no information at all about your aging tires. But luckily, there’s a hack for that!
You can find the age of any RV’s tires with a short investigation. The Department of Transportation requires that all tires be stamped with the manufacturing date, which are conveniently found on the outside of each tire.

In this image, the DOT indicates Department of Transportation, with the last four numbers 4817 indicating the date of production. 48 is the week of the year it was produced, meaning the tire was made in November, and 17 is the year, so the tire has been on the RV since November of 2017.
RV manufacturers recommend changing the tires every five years as a baseline, but more often depending on how much wear and tear they are receiving. RVers parked in the same place for several years may be tempted to not bother with a tire change, but beware, sun damage and unseen dry rot can wreck even the most unused tire that’s been sitting still. It’s best to do a regular tire check-up and replacement every few years, including replacing any extra tires that may be hidden away as spares.
