Taking Your RV Out of Winter Storage

Before you hit the road with spring RV camping, it’s important to properly de-winterize your camper. The following steps will help you get your RV properly maintained after long-term storage.

Measure Your Tires

There are two key measurements you’ll want to get to ensure your tires are safe for the road. First, look at your tire air pressure. If your tires are over- or under-inflated, this can cause you problems on the road. Look up the manufacturer’s recommendations and use a tire pressure gauge to measure your tires’ air pressure levels.

Second, scope out your tire tread. Tread plays an important role in ensuring your tires maintain traction with the road. Over time, it gets worn down naturally. Eventually, you’ll need to replace it. Your owner’s manual should tell you what levels it should be at.

Look At Your Fluids

For your RV to work, it needs to be supplied with several fluids. These get used up as you drive around, so you’ll want to be diligent about checking your fluid levels. When they get low, you’ll want to top them off. Check your brake fluids, windshield fluids, and antifreeze/coolant. If your model has a generator, be sure to service the oil and the filters.

Maintain the Water System

You’ll also want to de-winterize your water system. Drain your fresh water tank, rinse it out, and then fill it again with clean water. Then you’ll want to run your water pump to get clean water into your lines and flush out any remaining antifreeze.
