How to Spot a Fifth Wheel
Firstly, if you’re new to camping, a fifth wheel is a type of towable RV, meaning you’ll need another primary vehicle to haul it from one place to the next. However, they have a unique hitch that sets them apart from other towable RVs, one that swoops up and into an open bed, like you might find on a pickup. This creates an overlap between the two parts of the towing unit and a distinct look that’s easy to spot once you know what you’re looking for.
Size
The unique design isn’t arbitrary. It sets you up to enjoy a number of perks that you won’t necessarily find with other types of RVs.
The biggest perk is size. Fifth wheel trailers are the largest towable RVs on the market, and are among the largest RVs period. This means more interior space and also more interior height (a big bonus for our taller campers). They’re the perfect size for larger camping parties or even those who spend a lot of time on the road and need the extra elbow room.
More Storage Space
A bigger rig means more storage space, too. Fifth wheels offer more storage options, both inside and outside the camper. It’s one of the reasons why some travelers choose to use their fifth wheel for many weeks or months at a time, and even switch to full-time RVing with their fifth wheel.
Ease of Transport
Some of you might be a little concerned about how difficult it is to transport an RV that big. That’s where the design comes in. The overlap between the tow vehicle and the fifth wheel creates more stability for the driver, even on windy, difficult roads. You’ll still want to spend some time practicing behind the wheel, but you might find it’s not as steep of a learning curve as it looks.
It’s worth noting that the bigger size results in a heavier camper. You need to make sure you have a tow vehicle that can handle the additional weight. This will require knowing your tow vehicle’s gross combined weight rating, or GVWR. This tells you the maximum weight capacity for that particular make and model, including the tow vehicle itself, any trailered items, cargo, and passengers. If your fifth wheel is too heavy for the truck you currently own, you’ll need to make arrangements to find another tow vehicle.
These are just a handful of ways a fifth wheel makes for a great RV for families, friends, and even solo travelers with lots of ground to cover. When you’re ready to start looking through your options, contact Pete’s RV Center Indiana to schedule an appointment with our sales team for a tour of our fifth wheels for sale.
