Like all RVs, travel trailers need to be properly maintained in order to perform at their best. Routine maintenance helps a travel trailer to perform better and last longer. If you own a travel trailer, but you’re not sure where to start in terms of maintenance, this guide from the experts at Pete’s RV Center Indiana can help.

Consult Your Owner’s Manual

Your owner’s manual is an invaluable source of information regarding your travel trailer, both in terms of maintenance and just in general. Be sure to read your owner’s manual and understand its contents. It should have valuable information about things like how often you should schedule maintenance and which kinds of products can be safely used to maintain your travel trailer.

Inspect the Exterior and Interior

Regular inspections can help you discover maintenance issues before they have a chance to get worse. Start with the exterior, checking for rust, dents, grims, leaks, and water damage. Leaky roofs are very common in travel trailers, so be sure to check the roof along with the sides.

Once you’re done looking at the exterior, inspect your travel trailer’s interior. Water leaks, malfunctioning appliances, squeaky slide-outs, mold, mildew, and debris are all common issues. Finding and resolving a problem now will prevent it from getting worse later.

Check Tires

Check your travel trailer’s tires to make sure that the sidewalls are crack-free and the tread depth is still deep enough to provide traction. It’s also important to do what you can to keep the tires within the manufacturer-recommended range.

Cover It Up

We recommend storing your travel trailer indoors if possible. Indoor storage will afford your RV more protection against things like rain, debris, animal infestations, and theft. If you have no choice but to store your travel trailer outdoors, use a well-fitting waterproof cover to protect it.

Plan Ahead for Next Season

Winterizing and de-winterizing a travel trailer may be tedious, but not doing so can result in serious long-term damage. Never store your travel trailer for the winter if it’s not ready to withstand cold temperatures.
